Jonathan Bailey and Ariana Grande are set to join forces once again for an exciting theatrical project in 2027. The talented duo, known for their roles in the hit musical Wicked—where Bailey portrays Prince Fiyero and Grande plays Glinda the Good Witch—will reunite for a revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s acclaimed musical, Sunday in the Park With George.
The revival, which was first hinted at in December, will take place in London and is based on the iconic painting ‘A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte’ by George Seurat. The narrative focuses on a fictional representation of Seurat as he dedicates himself to his artwork, with Subplots revolving around his lover Dot and, in the second act, his great-grandson—also named George—who grapples with modern artistic challenges.
The announcement was made more personal with a social media post from Bailey, which featured the pair in front of Seurat’s famous artwork. His caption, “All it has to be is good,” cleverly references a song from the musical, underlining the duo’s enthusiasm for the project.
The esteemed production is set to be directed by Marianne Elliott, a recipient of multiple Tony and Oliver Awards, ensuring a high-caliber revival. Scheduled for a summer 2027 opening at London’s Barbican Theatre, the musical holds promise for an engaging and visually stunning experience.
The project follows the legacy of Sondheim, who passed away in November 2021. He was celebrated for his contributions to musical theatre, with works like West Side Story and Sweeney Todd to his credit. His influence on Broadway and the world of musical theater remains monumental, having garnered numerous awards including a record number of Tony Awards and Grammy Awards.
As excitement builds for this upcoming collaboration, fans can look forward to seeing how Bailey and Grande will bring a fresh interpretation to this celebrated work, honoring Sondheim’s remarkable legacy while showcasing their own talents on stage.
