Sailosi Lakovi and Sekove Tawake continue to face legal challenges as they were further remanded by the Nasinu Magistrates Court today, following charges linked to an attempted robbery that occurred on December 20 of last year in the Tacirua New Subdivision. Both individuals are charged with one count of attempted robbery, as well as resisting arrest and not complying with directives to provide their fingerprints.

During the proceedings, Lakovi raised alarms about a disturbing rumor concerning a possible explosion of an oil tank at Walu Bay that he believed could lead to the evacuation of the remand center where they are held. In response, the Magistrate assured the court that the Fiji Corrections Service would keep the court informed of any significant developments related to such incidents, emphasizing the court’s focus solely on matters pertinent to the defendants.

The prosecution has been allocated seven days to formulate its response regarding bail matters. Lakovi and Tawake have also been asked to secure two sureties each. The case has been adjourned, with a bail hearing set for January 22.

This case underscores the pressing issues within the judicial system and the conditions in custodial facilities, particularly the implications for those awaiting trial. Hopefully, this situation will prompt further reflection on the handling and safety of individuals in remand, paving the way for improvements in their treatment and the overall judicial process.
