A 40-year-old general manager, Shonal Sharma, has been granted an extension of bail as he faces serious allegations related to cocaine importation from Brazil. Sharma, who resides in Tamavua, Suva, appeared before Magistrate Vinaina Diroiroi in the Magistrate’s Court, with the case set for mention on March 3.

Sharma is accused of unlawfully importing illicit drugs after a suspicious shipment associated with his company was identified. The shipment, which arrived in Fiji on October 25, was declared as a “smoke machine.” However, it was flagged for inspection when a drug detection dog indicated the potential presence of narcotics.

During a thorough examination, authorities discovered a device labeled as a smoke machine, containing a motherboard concealed beneath a black cover. A further inspection revealed a white powdered substance hidden within, which preliminary testing confirmed to be cocaine, weighing approximately 640 grams.

The police initiated a controlled delivery following the discovery and subsequently intercepted a vehicle in the company’s parking lot on October 30, resulting in Sharma’s arrest. This case underscores the persistent efforts of law enforcement agencies in combating drug importation and safeguarding community safety. As investigations continue, there is hope that this case will lead to stronger measures against drug trafficking in the region, contributing to enhanced public safety.
