The High Court has denied a bail application from former corrections officer Epeli Laqeni, who faces a murder charge in connection with the alleged killing of his de facto partner in early September this year in Nakasi, Nausori. Justice Usaia Ratuvili expressed concern that Mr. Laqeni would not surrender or appear to face the charges if released on bail, which played a significant role in the ruling.

Mr. Laqeni’s application for bail included claims regarding unsuitable living conditions at the remand center, pointing out issues such as overcrowding and a rising number of HIV cases. He highlighted his placement in an infirmary meant for six individuals, which is currently housing 12 remandees. Additionally, he argued that being granted bail would better enable him to collaborate with his Legal Aid lawyer in preparing for his upcoming trial.

The State, however, firmly opposed the bail request, presenting compelling circumstantial evidence against Mr. Laqeni. This included complete admissions made during his caution interview and his early confessions to a police officer. Justice Ratuvili ultimately determined that granting bail would not serve the interests of justice.

Mr. Laqeni will remain in custody and is scheduled to enter a plea on December 23, as the legal process continues in this serious matter.
