The High Court has rejected a bail application from former corrections officer Epeli Laqeni, who faces murder charges related to the alleged killing of his de facto partner in early September in Nakasi, Nausori. Justice Usaia Ratuvili expressed significant concerns about the likelihood of Mr. Laqeni surrendering or appearing for his court proceedings if released on bail, which influenced the court’s decision.

In his bail application, Mr. Laqeni cited unfavorable living conditions at the remand center, mentioning issues like overcrowding and a concerning increase in HIV cases. He described his current living situation in an infirmary designed for six inmates but accommodating 12 remandees. Furthermore, he argued that being granted bail would facilitate more effective collaboration with his Legal Aid lawyer in preparation for his upcoming trial.

However, the State opposed the bail application vigorously, presenting persuasive circumstantial evidence against Mr. Laqeni. This evidence included his full admissions during a police caution interview and earlier confessions made to law enforcement. After considering the circumstances, Justice Ratuvili concluded that granting bail would not align with the interests of justice.

As a result, Mr. Laqeni will remain in custody and is set to enter a plea on December 23. The legal proceedings will continue as the case unfolds. This ruling underscores the court’s commitment to ensuring that defendants facing serious charges are held accountable and that the integrity of the judicial process is maintained.
