Concerns have been raised by Abel Caine, Secretary of Badminton Fiji, regarding the proposed Fiji High Performance Support Framework. During the National Sports Organisation Conference in Suva, Caine stood out as the only participant to openly oppose the initiative, emphasizing the need for thorough review and analysis before endorsement.

Caine highlighted that transparency and a comprehensive understanding of the proposal are crucial in supporting a national high-performance strategy. He expressed his reluctance to approve any plan without first reviewing all its details, stating, “I personally don’t approve anything without reading everything about it. I haven’t read anything, so I can’t approve this without being 100 percent confident in my own analysis.”

Moreover, he raised questions about the readiness of Fiji’s smaller sports to transition towards high-performance focus. Caine noted that many of these sports are still concentrated on grassroots participation and development. He suggested that the priority should lie in enhancing development pathways before shifting towards elite performance programs. “We are years away from high performance. We don’t need it today – we need it maybe in about five years’ time. Right now we are still building the foundation, especially with young athletes,” he remarked.

Despite his reservations about the national framework, Caine informed attendees that Badminton Fiji has already taken steps to enhance athlete development. The federation is collaborating with sports science experts to implement various strength and conditioning programs for approximately 15 elite players, with performance data being systematically monitored.

Caine also pointed out the difficulties smaller sports like badminton face regarding access to sports infrastructure, noting that facilities such as the sports hall at Fiji National University are not easily utilized by these sports. He advocated for improving access to these facilities and increasing grassroots participation as essential steps before transitioning to a national high-performance system.

In conclusion, while there are challenges to be addressed, Caine’s proactive approach in developing athlete pathways indicates a positive direction for Badminton Fiji’s focus on nurturing talent from the ground up.
