Badminton Fiji secretary Abel Caine has underscored the necessity of increasing awareness about badminton to engage more participants and supporters across the nation. The recent success of the 2025 Badminton Fiji Nationals, which attracted 70 players, has revealed significant potential for the sport’s growth.

Caine has acknowledged the hurdles in promoting badminton within Fiji, where it tends to be viewed as a minor sport with a limited audience. He points out a widespread misunderstanding of the game’s excitement and pace, emphasizing that badminton is recognized as the fastest sport in the world.

“There is a problem we are facing in Badminton Fiji, as we know this is a minor sport. Looking at the national competition held, we can see there is a smaller number of people who turn out, and fewer supporters for the sport,” Caine remarked. He stressed the urgent need for greater awareness, stating, “We need more awareness, so we can make the sport big in the country.”

The recent nationals, conducted at Yat Sen Secondary School, showcased players from major cities like Suva, Nadi, and Lautoka, with many participants having previously competed in the popular annual Secondary Schools tournament. The participation of over 70 players in this national competition reflects a budding enthusiasm for badminton in Fiji.

Caine is optimistic about the growing interest in this sport. He encourages the local community to rally around badminton to foster its development further. His message emphasizes that while there is a foundation of excitement regarding the sport, enhancing awareness and garnering more support will be crucial for its expansion in Fiji.
