Backyard Mystery: What Lies Beneath the Rug?

A woman and her boyfriend, Brandon, made a startling discovery this week while digging in their backyard in Columbus, Ohio. They unearthed a rug buried under a tree, prompting police to investigate amid online speculation that it might contain a dead body.

Katie Santry, a local content creator, shared her find on TikTok. While digging holes in her yard to install a fence, she and Brandon encountered the rug, which appeared to be buried more than two feet deep and possibly six feet long. Their attempts to dig it up were unsuccessful due to the compact soil and the roots of the tree overhead. During their digging, they also found a tree identification tag marked “Bloodgood.”

As interest grew online, with viewers urging her to pursue the matter further, Santry contacted the police. Initially, officers responded but stated they lacked the resources to dig and left the scene. Unfazed, Santry and her TikTok followers continued their efforts, though they did not manage to uncover anything.

Eventually, homicide detectives engaged in the case and brought in cadaver dogs to assist with the investigation. On Thursday, during a live stream, both dogs indicated interest in the area where the rug was found, prompting authorities to cordon off the vicinity with yellow police tape.

By Friday morning, the investigation continued in the 800 block of Cummington Road, with multiple police officers and crime scene investigators present at the site, according to news reports.
