Fraudulent activities have cast a shadow over the government’s Back-to-School Assistance Program, raising significant concerns about the integrity of the initiative designed to support families during the new school term. Recent reports indicate that a teacher’s spouse submitted eleven false applications, resulting in an illegal gain of $2,200. Additionally, allegations have surfaced that school administrative staff manipulated and falsified information within the FEMIS system, further jeopardizing the program’s intended purpose.

In response to these misconduct incidents, the government is taking decisive action. Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel has warned school heads and administrative staff that they bear responsibility for ensuring the accuracy of all submitted information. “Unfortunately, we have identified some fraudulent cases in previous years which are now under investigation,” Immanuel said, emphasizing that school leaders will be held accountable for inaccuracies that compromise the integrity of this essential support system.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to meticulously verify the accuracy of application details, particularly mobile numbers linked to payment methods such as M-PAiSA or MyCash, since financial disbursements are set to commence in January 2026, just before the school term starts on January 26. To aid families during this crucial period, the Ministry has established a Back-to-School Helpline, operational from Monday to Friday, offering support through designated mobile and landline numbers.

This initiative reflects the government’s steadfast commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability in educational support programs. By addressing fraudulent activities head-on and ensuring rigorous verification processes, the government aims to ensure that students who genuinely need assistance receive the vital support they deserve, thereby fostering an equitable educational landscape.
