Fraudulent activities have raised significant concerns regarding the government’s Back-to-School Assistance Program, which is intended to support families as students prepare for the new school term. Recent investigations revealed that a teacher’s spouse reportedly submitted eleven false applications, leading to an illicit gain of $2,200. Compounding the issue, allegations have surfaced that some school administrative staff manipulated and falsified information within the FEMIS system, putting the program’s integrity at risk.
In light of these incidents, the government is taking firm steps to address the misconduct. Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel has stated that school administrators and heads are responsible for the accuracy of all submitted information. “Unfortunately, we have identified some fraudulent cases in previous years which are now under investigation,” Immanuel remarked, underscoring that school leaders will be held accountable for any inaccuracies that threaten the program’s core mission.
Parents and guardians are advised to carefully verify the details of their applications, particularly the mobile numbers associated with payment methods like M-PAiSA and MyCash, as financial disbursements are scheduled to begin in January 2026, right before the school term kicks off on January 26. To further support families during this critical period, the Ministry has established a Back-to-School Helpline, which will be available from Monday to Friday, providing assistance through dedicated mobile and landline numbers.
This initiative highlights the government’s commitment to fostering transparency and accountability within educational support programs. By taking proactive measures to combat fraudulent activities and ensuring strict verification processes, the government aims to guarantee that students in genuine need receive critical support, thereby contributing to a more equitable educational environment.
As families gear up for the new academic year, collaboration between the Ministry and educational institutions will be essential to ensure a fair and efficient distribution of assistance. Promoting open communication and proactive strategies can help restore trust in the program, creating a positive atmosphere for all students as they embark on their educational journeys.
