Vinod Patel Ba is gearing up to take on the Drua Development XV in an eagerly anticipated opening match for the Super Rugby event on March 14, held at the historic 4R Govind Park. This matchup will set the stage for the main event featuring the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua against the Brumbies, marking an important occasion for local rugby fans.

Daksesh Patel, President of the Ba Rugby Union, shared his thoughts on the upcoming game, expressing that it is both an honor and a significant opportunity for the Vinod Patel Ba team to compete against the Drua Development. He emphasized the rich history of Govind Park, which has been a cornerstone of the community since its establishment in 1976, named in tribute to former mayor Kishore Govind, and is now celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Patel noted that this initiative would invigorate senior players during their off-season preparations for the Skipper Cup in 2026. He reaffirmed the union’s dedication not only to building a formidable rugby team but also to fostering community development and encouraging young athletes to pursue education, providing them with diverse future opportunities.

Acknowledging the challenges Ba has historically faced as a rugby province, Patel remarked that the region still lags behind other major unions in terms of resources and facilities. Despite these hurdles, he remains hopeful as they work to promote social integration, combat isolation, and establish proper development pathways for players and officials.

The importance of the Fijian Drua in the local rugby landscape is undeniable, with Patel highlighting the admiration local players have for the franchise. He feels that this match could strengthen the ties between provincial rugby and the Drua, contributing positively to the sport’s overall development.

Supporting this perspective, Fijian Drua development coach Nemani Nadolo-Kuridrani shared his enthusiasm for the lineup in the preliminary matches that also includes Malolo and the Aussie Fijians U20s. He noted that these additional fixtures would provide fans with the rare chance to enjoy multiple matches on the same day.

Patel conveyed his appreciation for the Drua’s invitation and pointed out the warm welcome the Ba Rugby Union and the local community will extend to the Drua Development team on March 14. This collaboration is seen as more than just a game; it represents a crucial step in advancing rugby in the region, enhancing both competitive spirit and community cohesion.
