Ba in Transit: Delays in Transport Hubs and Health Services Spark Calls for Action

Ba Residents Demand Better Transport Hubs and Health Services

Residents of Ba have voiced continuous concerns regarding the lack of adequate transport and healthcare services, even in light of recent pothole repairs in the area. Local businessman Dinesh Prakash Chand noted that these repairs coincided with the announcement of the Prime Minister’s visit, suggesting that prior issues had not received timely attention. He highlighted that around 3,500 daily commuters are facing challenges due to the absence of essential facilities, such as toilets and water taps, at transport stands, despite approximately 50 vans operating in Bar Town.

Chand has previously raised these concerns at town council meetings but felt that his pleas were largely ignored. He expressed a desire for sustainable solutions, stressing the importance of proper amenities at transport hubs. Infrastructure Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau addressed the matter, confirming that while ongoing road maintenance is a priority, the provision of public conveniences falls under the jurisdiction of the Town Council and the Fiji Roads Authority. He mentioned that initiatives are underway with the Land Transport Authority to identify suitable locations for updated minibus stands that will include necessary facilities.

The frustrations of commuters are compounded by challenges in the public health sector. Acting Sub-Divisional Medical Officer Dr. Anushil Chand indicated that discussions are underway to extend the operational hours of the Ba Health Center during weekends and public holidays, following constraints on General Outpatient Department services imposed by the ASPEN Medical group. However, this initiative has not yet been finalized.

The persistent delays in addressing transport and healthcare services have greatly affected residents’ daily lives, leading to urgent calls for government action. In spite of these ongoing challenges, the engagement from local officials provides a glimmer of hope that essential improvements will soon be implemented, ultimately enhancing both transport and health services in the Ba community.
