The Province of Ba is taking decisive action to combat the escalating influence of drugs by enforcing strict regulations and drawing on traditional taboos throughout its territories. Provincial Council Chair Ratu Meli Tora provided insights into these measures during a discussion with FBC News, emphasizing the urgency of the situation following a substantial drug bust at Vatia Wharf. He views this incident as a significant warning that immediate action is necessary to address the drug issue.

Ratu Meli admitted that the situation has worsened and noted a missed opportunity for traditional leaders to have intervened earlier. “We should have been proactive. It has been happening for a while, especially in neighbouring countries, and our leaders were not active at the time in preparing for it to reach our shores,” he stated, reflecting on the concern regarding the influence of drugs in the region.

The areas of Ba, particularly from Vatia to Sonaisali, face vulnerabilities due to the considerable tourism activities in and around Nadi, which can exacerbate the drug problem. In an effort to combat this threat, Ratu Meli praised the initiatives taken by local leaders, including the Tui Sabeto and Tui Vuda, who have temporarily banned the use of yaqona, alcohol, and cigarettes as part of their commitment to the anti-drug campaign.

Additionally, he mentioned the importance of engaging with the Provincial Officer to address drug issues comprehensively across all zones in Ba, including informal settlements. This collaborative approach seeks to strengthen community resilience against drug influences and foster a healthier environment for residents and visitors alike. The commitment expressed by local leaders and the proactive measures being implemented reflect a hopeful turn in the fight against drug-related challenges in the Province of Ba.
