Ba in Transit: Delays in Transport Hubs and Health Services Spark Calls for Action

Residents of Ba have expressed ongoing concerns regarding the inadequacy of transport and health services despite the recent repair of potholes in the area. According to local businessman Dinesh Prakash Chand, the repairs were only executed following the announcement of the Prime Minister’s visit to the town. Chand pointed out that while approximately 50 vans operate daily in Bar Town, the absence of basic facilities such as toilets and water taps at transport stands continues to pose challenges for around 3,500 commuters.

Chand had previously raised these concerns at town council meetings but felt his issues were overlooked. He expressed hope for sustainable solutions, emphasizing the necessity for proper amenities at transport hubs. Infrastructure Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau addressed the situation, affirming that while road maintenance is ongoing, public conveniences are under the authority of the Town Council and the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA). He mentioned efforts are underway with the Land Transport Authority to identify suitable places for updated minibus stands with necessary facilities.

Chand’s pleas for expedient action underline the ongoing inconvenience commuters face due to delays in addressing transport services. The public health sector in Ba is also under pressure. Acting Sub-Divisional Medical Officer Dr. Anushil Chand indicated that discussions are in progress to extend the operational hours of Ba Health Center on weekends and public holidays. This initiative follows limitations imposed by the ASPEN Medical group on General Outpatient Department services, although this plan, as of yet, is still not finalized.

Residents voiced that persistent delays in both transport and healthcare services have disrupted their daily lives, leading to calls for rapid government intervention. Despite these challenges, the engagement from local officials offers a glimmer of hope that necessary improvements will soon materialize, fostering a more efficient and supportive environment for the Ba community and enhancing both their health and transport services.
