Ayton Debuts for Lakers, Emphasizes Rim Protection

Deandre Ayton made his debut with the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night, contributing one point in 18 minutes of play. Despite the low scoring, Ayton emphasized the importance of his defensive efforts, particularly noting his two blocked shots as a reflection of his commitment to enhancing the team’s defensive capabilities. Ayton, who joined the Lakers after a buyout agreement with the Portland Trail Blazers this summer, stated that his primary aim is to provide a strong defensive presence in the paint.

“I wanted to show the team I’m more committed on the defensive end more than the offense in a way,” Ayton explained. “I’m not really here for numbers. I’m here for whatever the Lakers want me to do. The main objective is really protecting that rim and closing out our possessions. I had fun blocking shots, being that anchor and seeing how the guys responded to me.”

In this game, Ayton was unable to make any of his shot attempts, failing to convert on both his field goals. However, he expressed that he does not have a specific expectation for shot attempts each night. Instead, he is prepared to let stars like Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves lead the offensive charge while filling the role of a big man in the paint.

“Coach JJ Redick is trusting these guys to be our primary ball handlers, and I’m absorbing all of that. It will probably be hard not to touch the ball with those great playmakers,” Ayton remarked.

The Lakers continue to navigate the season with a focus on integrating new players and solidifying their defense, an area where Ayton’s presence is expected to make a significant impact as the team seeks success in the upcoming games.
