Avelo Airlines has announced it will discontinue its operations at Hollywood Burbank Airport as part of a strategy to exit the West Coast market. The airline plans to shut down services by early December, focusing its resources and fleet on the East Coast. By August 12, Avelo will reduce its local fleet to just one aircraft before completely withdrawing from the region.
CEO Andrew Levy addressed the decision, emphasizing the challenging operating conditions and fierce competition that made continuing service in Burbank unviable from a financial perspective. Avelo initially launched flights from Burbank in 2021, expanding to serve 13 routes during its time there.
The decision to cease West Coast operations follows public outcry and protests against the airline, particularly after it entered into a contract with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to transport migrants. However, an Avelo spokesperson assured that the closure was not directly influenced by these protests.
In a bid to support its California crew, Avelo is providing opportunities for employees to transfer to other bases located in Charlotte, North Carolina; Hartford, Connecticut; and Wilmington, Delaware. For customers who have already booked flights, the airline assures that cancellations will be accommodated with full refunds.
This move by Avelo highlights the realities of airline management in a competitive environment and the need for adaptability. There is a silver lining for employees and travelers alike, as personnel will have options for relocation, and travelers can expect prompt customer service in handling cancellations.
