The Colorado Avalanche are actively looking to enhance their roster as they approach the Stanley Cup playoffs, with eyes on forward Kiefer Sherwood from the San Jose Sharks. Sherwood, who was previously traded from the Vancouver Canucks to the Sharks in exchange for AHL defenseman Cole Clayton and two future second-round picks (2026 and 2027), has caught the attention of Avalanche insiders.
Recent reports indicate that the Avalanche are closely monitoring Sherwood’s situation in San Jose. Should the Sharks determine that their playoff chances are diminishing, they might consider moving him for a package similar to what they originally provided for him.
If the Avalanche were to acquire Sherwood, he would undoubtedly add valuable grit and scoring depth to a team that has consistently been a contender in the NHL. Last season, he recorded 40 points (19 goals, 21 assists) while playing for the Canucks and showcased his potential to thrive in a well-suited line and coaching environment like that of the Avalanche. Furthermore, he led the league in hits last season, registering an impressive 462 in just 78 games.
Currently, the Avalanche hold approximately $2.3 million in available cap space, making such a trade feasible. They have the necessary assets, including two second-round picks in 2027 and the possibility of including a defensive prospect to sweeten the deal. The crucial question remains whether General Manager Chris McFarland is willing to part with significant draft capital for a player who might only be a rental if he chooses not to re-sign with the team.
As the Avalanche look to solidify their chances in the postseason, adding a player of Sherwood’s caliber could provide the boost needed to advance deep into the playoffs.
