As the NHL season approaches, excitement builds around potential debuts for the Colorado Avalanche. It’s always a memorable occasion when a player, whether a young talent, a free agent from Europe, or a seasoned minor leaguer, steps onto the ice for their first NHL game. Let’s explore who might be making their debuts this season.

Reflecting on the Previous Season

In the 2022-23 season, the Avalanche saw four players make their NHL debuts, a figure that aligns with the organization’s trends in recent years. Based on a close vote, four was the preferred choice, just surpassing three. My personal prediction leaned towards four, considering the likelihood of other players from the minor leagues also making appearances. Ultimately, the four who made their debuts included Nikolai Kovalenko, who played two playoff games, and three college free agents: defenseman Sam Malinski, who participated in 23 games, along with forwards Jason Polin and Ondrej Pavel, who played seven and two games, respectively.

Looking Ahead to the 2024-25 Season

This season, top prospect Calum Ritchie stands out as a prime candidate for his first game with the Avalanche. His debut is highly anticipated by both the organization and fans, regardless of whether it happens this season or later. Aside from Ritchie, there are other signed prospects like defenseman Sean Behrens and forwards Ivan Ivan and Chase Bradley, who could be called up from the Colorado Eagles. Matt Stienburg, a forward, also remains a potential candidate as he approaches the final year of his Entry-Level Contract.

Additionally, European free agents like Finnish forward Jere Innala could see their first NHL game count as a debut, despite being 26 years old. Minor league players including defenseman Wyatt Aamodt, returning for another year, and goaltender Trent Miner, who provides depth for the team, are also in consideration for potential debuts.

As always, in-season trades or last-minute NCAA free agent signings could lead to unexpected NHL debuts from players who are not yet part of the Avalanche organization.
