Fiji is closely monitoring Australia’s recent legislative move to limit social media access for individuals under the age of 16, with the intent to bolster online safety for young users. The current standard age for access to most social media platforms is set at 13. Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Communications Minister, Manoa Kamikamica, stated that the Fijian government is evaluating the potential impacts of such a policy to enhance the protection of its children from harmful online content.
Australia’s newly implemented legislation mandates age verification for social media services such as Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly known as Twitter). Non-compliance could result in significant fines, reaching up to AUD $50 million (approximately FJ $74.7 million). It’s noteworthy that gaming and messaging platforms are exempt from this regulation.
Despite facing criticism from tech companies regarding the hastiness of its implementation and insufficient consultation, Australia’s action represents a pivotal moment in the global effort to regulate minors’ social media usage. In Fiji, similar regulatory discussions are ongoing within the National Pornography Taskforce, reflecting a proactive stance toward addressing the challenges presented by digital platforms.
