Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner Krissy Barrett is set to enhance security collaboration by signing a new policing agreement with the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) on November 1, 2025. This significant agreement aims to improve the flow of information and support for investigations between the two agencies, which is crucial in tackling multijurisdictional organized crime networks that impact both Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG).
The agreement builds on an earlier memorandum that established a foundation for cooperation. Commissioner Barrett emphasized that the collaboration is essential for streamlining resource sharing and technology, allowing both forces to address threats more effectively and proactively. She praised RPNGC Commissioner David Manning for his respected leadership in the Pacific and recognition of the need for strong alliances in combating shared challenges.
As part of her first international visit in this new role, Commissioner Barrett will participate in various activities, including a bilateral meeting with Fiji Police Force Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, who has also been a strong advocate for regional security.
In addition to the agreement, Barrett will attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Bomana Police College’s Regional Centre of Excellence in Port Moresby. This ceremony marks the beginning of an extensive upgrade that will enhance the college’s capabilities to train recruits and investigators, aiming to accommodate participants from other Pacific nations by early 2027.
This comprehensive project will introduce new facilities, including classrooms and cadet barracks, which are vital in addressing the domestic demand for increased police numbers and improving public safety standards.
Furthermore, Commissioner Barrett will join the NRL Pacific Championships match featuring teams from PNG and Fiji, showcasing the camaraderie and partnership between the nations.
