Australia and Fiji have solidified their enduring friendship with the launch of the Australia–Fiji Governance Partnership (AFGP), a four-year initiative valued at AUD $25 million aimed at enhancing governance in Fiji. This partnership seeks to bolster Fiji’s public service capabilities, promote economic reforms, and advocate for democratic values through closer cooperation between the two nations.
Building on the previously successful Fiji–Australia Institutional Partnership Programme, which has focused on areas such as public financial management and civil service reform, the AFGP represents a deepened commitment to collaborative governance. At the launch held in Suva, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized that this partnership surpasses mere developmental efforts; it symbolizes shared values and mutual progress.
“We are not merely launching a program; this is a reaffirmation of our collective dedication to improving governance and advancing economic reform,” Rabuka stated. The partnership will concentrate on three principal areas: civil service reform, economic governance, and the promotion of democratic norms, all in line with Fiji’s National Development Plan. Notably, the establishment of the Fiji Learning Institute for Public Service (FLIPS) highlights a critical step in ushering in modernization and efficiency within the civil service.
Rabuka expressed optimism, noting, “Our civil service will become more efficient and better aligned with the needs of our citizens. Reform involves transforming not only systems but our approach to public service.” Both the Ministry of Civil Service and the Ministry of Finance, with Australian support, are vital in enhancing government functions, performance management, and digitization of essential processes.
Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, Peter Roberts, echoed Rabuka’s sentiments, asserting that the partnership illustrates Australia’s steadfast commitment to Fiji’s national development aims and to building resilient, transparent institutions. He remarked, “Strong governance systems lead to improved decision-making and effective implementation.” Roberts recognized the shared democratic values that naturally align the two nations in governance reform and commended Fiji’s leadership in setting collaborative priorities.
Looking ahead, the AFGP is poised to support reforms that will enhance civil service delivery, strengthen fiscal accountability, and fortify democratic institutions in Fiji. Such initiatives foster confidence not only in government effectiveness but also in the economic security of the nation.
This partnership comes on the heels of substantial support under the Vuvale Partnership, which Australia emphasizes as an essential framework for addressing Fiji’s development challenges, including critical investments aimed at improving public services, health, and education.
