Fiji and Australia have reinforced their longstanding agricultural partnership during a recent courtesy visit by Australian High Commissioner Peter Roberts to Fiji’s Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Hon. Tomasi Tunabuna. The meeting underscored Australia’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s agricultural development, focusing on vital initiatives aimed at enhancing food security and resilience.
High Commissioner Roberts highlighted three major initiatives currently aiding Fiji: the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the Market Development Facility (MDF), and the Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access Plus (PHAMA Plus) Program. These initiatives not only contribute financial resources but also provide essential technical expertise and innovation, which are crucial as Fiji seeks to modernize its agricultural sector and improve productivity.
Minister Tunabuna expressed gratitude for Australia’s ongoing assistance, describing the partnership as both reliable and forward-looking. Since the establishment of their formal agreements in 1995, Fiji and Australia have executed 15 accords aimed at strengthening rural development through enhanced technology transfer and trade facilitation. Currently, seven of these agreements remain active, supporting initiatives that align with Fiji’s Non-Sugar Agriculture Sector 10-Year Policy and the Ministry’s 5-Year Strategic Plan. These initiatives focus on climate-resilient farming, improved irrigation systems, and the promotion of inclusive development for women and youth.
