Fiji and Australia have solidified their long-standing agricultural partnership during a recent meeting between Australian High Commissioner Peter Roberts and Fiji’s Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Hon. Tomasi Tunabuna. This engagement highlighted Australia’s dedication to supporting Fiji’s agricultural development through initiatives aimed at enhancing food security and resilience.
High Commissioner Roberts underscored three key initiatives that play a significant role in assisting Fiji: the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the Market Development Facility (MDF), and the Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access Plus (PHAMA Plus) Program. These initiatives not only offer financial support but also deliver essential technical expertise and innovative solutions, which are vital as Fiji strives to modernize its agricultural sector and boost productivity.
Minister Tunabuna expressed his appreciation for Australia’s continued support, noting that the partnership is reliable and forward-looking. He emphasized the necessity of ongoing collaboration in the face of rising climate risks and challenges to food security, affirming Fiji’s willingness to explore new opportunities for sustained agricultural growth.
Since formal agreements were established in 1995, Fiji and Australia have executed 15 accords designed to strengthen rural development through improved technology transfer and trade facilitation. Of these, seven agreements remain active, aligning with Fiji’s Non-Sugar Agriculture Sector 10-Year Policy and the Ministry’s 5-Year Strategic Plan. These initiatives prioritize climate-resilient farming, enhanced irrigation systems, and the promotion of inclusive development for women and youth.
Recent reports reflect the significance of such cooperative efforts, noting Fiji’s growing agricultural export potential. Partnerships with organizations like ACIAR are enhancing food security by promoting sustainable practices and innovations tailored to the needs of local farmers.
