Austin’s Sports Weekend: F1 and College Football Collide!

Austin is set to be a major hub for sports this weekend as it hosts both the Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix and a highly anticipated college football matchup between No. 5 Georgia and the No. 1-ranked Longhorns. The F1 race will kick off with practice sessions on Friday and the main event on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET, streaming live on ABC and ESPN+. Meanwhile, the Texas vs. Georgia game takes place Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET, also available on ABC and ESPN+.

The Circuit of the Americas (COTA) has become a favored destination for F1 drivers, and this year’s attendance is expected to surpass previous records. The event is estimated to have generated around $7 billion for the local economy over its first decade, creating over 64,000 jobs annually in Texas. Coupling the excitement of the F1 race with a significant SEC football game has heightened the buzz in the city.

Historically, Texas has played its most significant game outside of Austin during the State Fair of Texas, but this weekend marks a notable occasion as the Longhorns host a top-five matchup at home for only the fifth time in history. The demand for tickets has skyrocketed, with prices ranging from approximately $400 to $7,000. Hotel prices for the weekend are averaging $477 per night, while Austin’s airport anticipates 40,000 departing visitors on Monday, advising travelers to arrive early.

Cultural festivities will also be part of the experience, as College GameDay will be present, and fans can enjoy music from Austin’s own Spoon before the football game. The excitement in the stadium is expected to reach new heights with innovative game-day enhancements.

The U.S. Grand Prix has played a pivotal role in Formula 1’s growth in America, particularly after the launch of “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” on Netflix. COTA, renowned for its well-designed circuit that promotes thrilling races, has consistently increased attendance over the years. The venue’s welcoming atmosphere allows drivers to embrace a more relaxed vibe compared to other international races.

Austin’s rich sports culture is further deepened by competition from other Grand Prix events in Miami and Las Vegas, but COTA is determined to maintain its premier status, offering fans unique experiences like celebrity concerts and easy access between events this weekend.
