Austin, Texas, has taken a significant step in honoring the legacy of MLB legend Don Baylor by renaming a local park in his memory. Formerly known as Westenfield Neighborhood Park, the venue will be officially designated Don Baylor Park during a ceremony scheduled for February 28. This heartfelt tribute, which will include the unveiling of a marker by Baylor’s son, Don Baylor Jr., serves to celebrate both Baylor’s impressive athletic achievements and the rich history of the Black community in Austin.
Baylor, who passed away in 2017, was a talented baseball player and advocate who faced significant challenges during his early years. Growing up in the Clarksville neighborhood, just a short distance from the park, he was once barred from playing there due to racial segregation—a poignant reminder of the obstacles he overcame in his journey to success. As reported, the park will not only serve as a tribute to Baylor’s accomplishments but will also reflect Austin’s commitment to recognizing and celebrating local Black history.
Over the course of his 19-year MLB career, Don Baylor made a profound impact on the sport. He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles and went on to play for several teams, including the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, and Minnesota Twins. In 1979, he won the American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) award and claimed a World Series title, further cementing his place in baseball history. He was also honored as Manager of the Year later in his career.
Don Baylor Jr. expressed the significance of the park’s renaming, describing it as a fulfilling tribute to his father’s legacy. “It would probably be one of his biggest achievements,” he stated, emphasizing its importance alongside his father’s MVP award and managerial accolades. In addition to his sports career, Baylor’s contributions to society included advocacy work for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, as well as a reputation for generosity and faith.
This park renaming not only honors Don Baylor’s memory but also serves as a reminder of the progress made in combatting racial inequalities in sports and society. The event represents a hopeful acknowledgment of the collective determination to recognize and celebrate the milestones achieved by figures like Baylor, inspiring future generations to pursue their dreams against all odds.
