Hale, who killed six people, including three children and three adults, on March 27, 2023, had contemplated targeting I.T. Creswell Middle School, where she had previously attended. However, she ultimately decided against it due to her belief that it was predominantly a black school.
In entries dated around 2021, Hale outlined a list of “advantages” and “disadvantages” related to attacking the two schools. Among the disadvantages she noted for targeting Creswell was her concern about emotionally impacting the black community, as she expressed love and care for her black friends and highlighted their suffering. She wrote, “Black community in despair [and] suffering (I don’t want to cause that) = don’t want to harm them = dread,” showcasing a troubling contrast between her internal conflicts and her violent intentions.
Hale opted for the Covenant School, primarily because it was a “predominantly white school,” as she expressly indicated her hatred for white people. The entries reveal a disturbing mix of personal enmity and social considerations, manipulating her perceived identities in ways that ultimately led to catastrophic choices.
