Auckland Man Swallows Fabergé Egg During Jewellery Store Theft

A man has been arrested for theft after an unusual incident in a jewelry store in Auckland, New Zealand. He allegedly walked into Partridge Jewellers, picked up a $19,200 James Bond-themed Fabergé egg, and swallowed it. The police were summoned following reports of this bizarre act involving the Octopussy egg, crafted from 18-karat yellow gold. Central area commander Grae Anderson revealed that the Auckland city beat team responded rapidly, apprehending the 32-year-old man inside the store.

The theft is notable not only because of the item’s value but also due to the circumstances surrounding it. According to police statements, the egg has not yet been recovered as it remains in the man’s internal organs. The charge sheets indicate that the man was charged with theft on November 29 for allegedly stealing the Fabergé x 007 Special Edition Octopussy Egg Surprise Locket, which is valued at approximately $33,585.

Moreover, the man is also facing charges for previous thefts, including cat litter and a tray from a private residence, as well as an iPad from Partridge Jewellers just a day prior. He is set to appear in district court on Monday. Fabergé has described the unique Octopussy egg as featuring “green guilloché enamel and set with 60 white diamonds and 15 blue sapphires.” The item is reminiscent of a scene in the film “Octopussy,” where James Bond swaps a Fabergé egg during an auction, further enhancing its allure.

This unusual case highlights the lengths to which individuals may go in committing theft, and the investigation continues as authorities work to recover the costly stolen item.
