Auburn University’s recent momentum from their victory over Kentucky was abruptly halted on Saturday as they faced a setback against the Vanderbilt Commodores, resulting in a 17-7 defeat at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Despite outclassing Vanderbilt in several areas, including total yardage—Auburn gained 327 yards compared to Vanderbilt’s 227—and completing 30% more passes, the Tigers could not convert these advantages into points on the scoreboard. Key statistics underscored Auburn’s struggles: the team managed to convert only 2 of 13 third-down attempts and was unable to penetrate the red zone, while Vanderbilt capitalized on both of their red zone opportunities.
The Commodores’ defensive prowess was evident, as they recorded seven tackles for loss, including three sacks, totaling a 22-yard loss for Auburn. On the offensive side, Auburn’s longest drive consisted of 11 plays covering 80 yards, which culminated in their only touchdown during the game. However, after that impressive possession in the second quarter, the Tigers could not string together any substantial drives, failing to sustain offensive momentum.
The game remained tied at 7-7 at halftime, but Vanderbilt broke the deadlock in the third quarter with a 31-yard field goal by kicker Brock Taylor, gaining a 10-7 lead. They solidified their victory with a 4-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Diego Pavia to Eli Stowers late in the fourth quarter, which was enabled by a crucial penalty on Auburn that kept their drive alive.
In the first half, both teams initially exchanged punts before Vanderbilt struck first with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Pavia to AJ Newberry. Auburn eventually responded with a touchdown of their own, as Payton Thorne connected with Rivaldo Fairweather for a 30-yard score, but despite outgaining Vanderbilt in the half, they struggled with third-down conversions and only managed one scoring opportunity.
Looking ahead, Auburn will take a break next weekend to regroup and prepare for their last three games of the season, starting with a matchup against ULM on November 16 at 11:45 a.m. CT at home.
While this loss is disappointing for Auburn fans, it’s an opportunity for the team to regroup, refocus, and rebound in their upcoming games, keeping the hope alive for a strong finish to the season. The Tigers have the potential to learn from this game and improve as they aim to close out the year with renewed determination.
