Auburn's Hugh Freeze Buyout: What Happens If the Tigers Part Ways?

Auburn’s Hugh Freeze Buyout: What Happens If the Tigers Part Ways?

Auburn University faces a significant financial obligation should they decide to terminate head coach Hugh Freeze at the conclusion of the 2025 season. The Tigers would be liable to pay Freeze $15.4 million as part of his buyout agreement, which decreases by approximately $4.8 million each year. This contractual arrangement comes after a disappointing performance, exemplified by the team’s recent 10-3 loss at home to Kentucky.

Hugh Freeze, who was hired in November 2022, signed a six-year contract that extends through the 2028 season. The buyout specifies that should Freeze be dismissed on December 1, 2025, the university would pay him 75% of his remaining salary, amounting to $406,105 per month until January 31, 2029. In subsequent seasons, his buyout decreases to $9.75 million after 2026 and $4.87 million after 2027, ultimately reaching $0 after 2028.

In addition to his salary of $6.75 million for this season, Freeze’s contract includes perks such as an annual new car, coverage for gas, service, and insurance, as well as access to a private suite for home games. He also enjoys membership dues at a country club of his choice, further emphasizing the substantial benefits included in his role.

Since joining Auburn, Freeze has struggled to elevate the program’s performance, which has not seen a winning season since 2019. His record currently stands at 15-19, with a disheartening 6-16 in Southeastern Conference (SEC) contests. This season, the Tigers have only managed one win in the SEC, which they secured last week against Arkansas. Despite a strong defensive showing, allowing just 18.6 points per game, the offense ranks among the lowest in the SEC, averaging 340.6 yards per game.

Before his tenure at Auburn, Freeze enjoyed notable successes, achieving four consecutive winning seasons at Liberty and reaching a top-10 national ranking during his time at Ole Miss. Auburn fans and stakeholders remain hopeful that the program can regain its strength and competitiveness, but significant challenges lie ahead as Freeze continues his pursuit of improvement in the on-field performance.
