Auburn guard Tahaad Pettiford has decided to withdraw from the NBA Draft and return to play for the Tigers next season, a move he announced on Tuesday during an interview with ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.
Pettiford expressed his satisfaction with participating in the draft process, noting the valuable feedback he received from NBA teams. “Going back to Auburn is a better situation for me. I see myself being a higher pick next year,” he stated. The young guard currently feels that this is not the right time to enter the league, particularly as a shorter player, indicating a strategic choice to gain more experience and improve his draft status.
During his time testing the draft waters, Pettiford stood out at the combine and participated in workouts with six teams. His potential was highlighted by Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports, who had projected Pettiford as the No. 30 overall pick to the Los Angeles Clippers, leaving little margin for error this year.
Looking ahead to Auburn’s upcoming season, Pettiford’s return is bolstered by an attractive NIL deal, although details remain undisclosed. As he enters his sophomore year, expectations are high as he aims for a top draft position in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Last season, Pettiford made his mark by averaging 11.6 points and three assists in nearly 23 minutes per game. He earned a spot on the SEC’s All-Freshman Team and played a crucial role in leading the Tigers to a 32-6 record, culminating in a Final Four appearance before their loss to the eventual national champion Florida.
Additionally, Pettiford will not be alone this season, as Auburn has seen an influx of talent through the transfer portal, including Keyshawn Hall from UCF, KeShawn Murphy from Mississippi State, and Kevin Overton from Texas Tech. Recently, Auburn also secured a commitment from Serbian forward Filip Jovic.
With the NBA Draft deadline approaching on June 25, Pettiford’s decision underscores a commitment to personal growth and the potential for future success as part of a strengthening Auburn program.
