Auburn Receiver’s Arrest Raises Questions for Football Future

Auburn University sophomore wide receiver Malcolm Simmons was arrested on Wednesday on serious charges of domestic violence involving strangulation or suffocation, as reported by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. His bond has been set at $20,000.

In his freshman season, the Montgomery native had an impressive performance, amassing 451 yards on 40 receptions, and played a key role alongside his fellow freshman Cam Coleman, who recorded 598 yards. Collectively, they contributed over 1,000 receiving yards during their debut year, highlighting their potential as a formidable duo for Auburn’s offense.

This fall, Simmons was anticipated to be a crucial member of a highly-rated wide receiver corps that includes Coleman, Georgia Tech transfer Eric Singleton, Jr., and Wake Forest transfer Horatio Fields. Unfortunately, Simmons’s legal troubles come on the heels of another incident involving Auburn football, as redshirt freshman linebacker DJ Barber was arrested a week earlier on charges related to drug trafficking and was subsequently dismissed from the team.

Despite the troubling incidents, Auburn’s football program continues to emphasize the importance of accountability and personal conduct among its players, showing a commitment to addressing issues promptly and maintaining a strong program culture. Fans and supporters will hope for positive developments in Simmons’s situation and the overall team dynamic as the season approaches.
