Auburn University has made its first commitment during the transfer portal window, bringing in quarterback Locklan Hewlett from the University of South Florida. Hewlett announced his decision via an Instagram post on Saturday. The third-string quarterback for the Bulls, Hewlett saw action in two games this past season, totaling 21 snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.

His most noteworthy moment came in the season opener against Boise State, where he successfully threw a touchdown on a trick play involving a fake punt. In addition, he played 20 snaps during USF’s bowl game against Old Dominion, completing six of eleven passes for 41 yards, although he also recorded an interception.

Hewlett’s arrival marks an important step for Auburn as it looks to revamp its quarterback lineup. With Jackson Arnold, Ashton Daniels, and Deuce Knight anticipated to enter the portal, Auburn’s quarterback roster had become quite thin. Prior to Hewlett’s commitment, incoming freshman Rhys Brush was the only scholarship quarterback on the team.

Auburn is expected to pursue additional quarterbacks to adequately fill the roster. One of the top targets appears to be Byrum Brown, who has been the starting quarterback for USF over the past three seasons, amassing over 4,000 yards of total offense in 2025 alone. Brown is set to visit Auburn this weekend, potentially solidifying the team’s efforts in strengthening its quarterback position.

This proactive approach signals Auburn’s determination to build a robust quarterback lineup and lays the foundation for a competitive future on the field.
