AUBURN — Alex Golesh’s initial months as Auburn football’s head coach are critical to shaping the future of the program, but thus far, his start has been challenging. With nearly 30 players expected to enter the transfer portal as it opened on January 2, including two-thirds being former blue-chip recruits, Golesh faces a daunting task. This substantial roster turnover comes as Auburn attempts to leverage its status as the 13th-most-talented roster in the nation last season.

Among those leaving are standout players like Cam Coleman and Deuce Knight, which raises the stakes for Golesh and his newly assembled coaching staff. Their focus will shift to building a competitive SEC team while attempting to retain some of the talent that is contemplating a departure.

As the season progresses, the Tigers have already made their first transfer commitment: Locklan Hewlett, a quarterback from South Florida, who joins following a season in which he played in two games.

Additionally, Auburn is set to welcome a visit from LSU offensive lineman Ory Williams, who will provide the program with another potential asset as he enters his redshirt sophomore year, having played in four games last season.

Other noteworthy transfer prospects include South Florida quarterback Byrum Brown, who just completed a standout season with impressive statistics, making him a prime candidate for recruitment as he looks for a new opportunity. Iowa State defensive back Tre Bell is also on Auburn’s radar, along with several players from various programs expressing interest in the Tigers.

Auburn’s strategy extends beyond incoming transfers. Defensive backs and safeties, such as Blake Woodby and returning players An’Quon Fegans and Eric Winters, have announced their intent to return for the 2026 season. This bolstered defense will be vital as the Tigers navigate a significant roster transition.

The team’s commitment to securing talent and navigating transfer challenges illustrates a pro-active approach as Auburn football heads into an unpredictable year. Coach Golesh’s ability to manage these changes will be crucial in determining the program’s trajectory amidst a rapidly evolving landscape.
