Atlanta Remembers DJ Unk: A Legacy of Snap Music and Heartfelt Tributes

DJ Unk, the beloved Atlanta rapper renowned for his chart-topping hits “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,” has passed away at the age of 43. Born Anthony Platt, he emerged as a pivotal figure in the snap music genre, a style that gained traction in the mid-2000s and fundamentally shaped the Southern hip-hop scene.

Unk first made waves in 2006 with his hit “Walk It Out,” peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart, while “2 Step” followed closely behind at No. 4. His wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media, asking for privacy as the family copes with their loss. “Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER,” she posted on Facebook.

The impact of DJ Unk’s career went beyond his musical achievements. His former label, Big Oomp Records, issued a public tribute, expressing, “It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend… DJ Unk was not just a legendary DJ, rapper, and producer, but a true cornerstone of our label.” As of now, the cause of his death remains undisclosed.

Unk began his music journey as a DJ at just 17 years old, collaborating with other notable DJs such as DJ Jelly and DJ Montay. He released his debut album “Beat’n Down Yo Block!” in 2006 via Koch Records, featuring collaborations with industry talents like Jazze Pha and Baby D. The success of “Walk It Out” led to a remix that included guest appearances from notable artists like André 3000 and Jim Jones, firmly establishing his place in music history. His follow-up album, “2econd Season,” released in 2008, did not achieve the same level of commercial success but further showcased his artistry.

In 2009, Unk experienced a heart attack, attributing it to the grueling demands of the music industry, including erratic touring schedules and lifestyle choices. Reflecting on the experience in an interview, he highlighted the toll that his relentless work ethic took on his health, emphasizing the need for balance.

In recent years, despite a reduced output, Unk made a memorable return to the stage, performing at the 2023 BET Awards. His enduring legacy, characterized by both his infectious songs and his influence on Southern hip-hop, will clearly live on in the hearts of fans and fellow artists alike.

As we remember DJ Unk, it serves as a reminder to cherish the contributions of artists who shape our culture and to take care of our health in the pursuit of our dreams. His life, though cut short, leaves a vibrant legacy in music that will inspire future generations.
