Atlanta Rap Icon Rich Homie Quan Passes Away at 34

Rich Homie Quan, a prominent figure in Atlanta’s rap scene, has died. Born Dequantes Devontay Lamar, he was recognized for his contributions to hip hop, particularly during the mid-2010s. The Fulton County Medical Examiner confirmed that the rapper passed away in Atlanta at the age of 34. The cause of death remains unknown, with an autopsy planned for Friday.

Following the announcement of his death on Thursday, tributes have begun to pour in from fans and fellow artists alike. Quan gained widespread fame with his 2013 track “Type of Way” and later found additional success with his 2015 hit “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh).” Over his career, he received numerous nominations from BET and BET Hip Hop Awards, including nods for Best New Artist and the People’s Champ Award.

Born in October 1989, Rich Homie Quan was the eldest of three siblings and grew up in a single-parent household. Initially aspiring to be a baseball player, his path took a turn toward music. He shared his struggles candidly in interviews, including a 15-month prison sentence in 2011 related to burglaries. After his release, he dedicated himself to music and quickly rose to prominence.

In the wake of his passing, well-known figures in the music industry have shared their condolences. Singer Jacquees expressed his grief, calling Quan a legend and stating, “Rest in Peace my brother.” 2 Chainz reflected on their recent conversation about video projects and shared prayers for Quan’s family. Rapper Quavo also mourned the loss, acknowledging the unexpected nature of the tragedy. Music engineer Alex Tumay remembered Quan as one of the nicest people he had worked with and expressed his sorrow over the news.
