Rain is finally making its long-awaited return to Atlanta, accompanied by a notable drop in temperatures. An 11Alive Weather Impact Alert has been issued for late Sunday into Monday due to the arrival of cold, impactful rain.
This weather development marks a significant change in the region’s climate, though officials emphasize that it does not pose a life-threatening risk. The anticipated rainfall, which has been absent for some time, combined with the chillier air, may come as a surprise for many residents.
Conditions will remain dry at the start of the weekend, with just a few clouds making an appearance on Saturday. Sunday will commence with dry weather but is expected to transition throughout the day as showers begin to roll in. Temperatures are forecasted to reach around 66 degrees, but by late Sunday, heavier rainfall will begin to cover the area.
Weather models predict that this system could bring close to an inch of rain. In conjunction with the precipitation, a northeast flow will contribute to the arrival of cold air at the surface, a phenomenon meteorologists term “cold air damming” (CAD). This occurs when high pressure situated over the northeast enhances the easterly flow, forcing colder air from the mountains into the region, creating a damming effect.
