Atlanta Braces for Early Freeze as Arctic Chill Arrives

Temperatures in the Atlanta area are expected to drop significantly as a cold front moves in, bringing the first freeze of the season. The cold blast of Arctic air is set to arrive by late Sunday, leading to temperatures dipping into the upper 20s and low 30s by early Tuesday morning, November 11th, which is also Veteran’s Day.

The 11Alive Weather Impact Team has issued a Weather Impact Alert for the region, signaling that residents should prepare for the unusual chill. On Monday, temperatures will start in the 30s, with wind chill making it feel even colder—potentially in the 20s. Winds could gust over 35 mph throughout the day, contributing to the biting cold. While afternoon highs may reach the 40s, it is the wind chill that will dominate the feel of the day.

The coldest temperatures are anticipated Tuesday morning, with readings around 30 in Atlanta and potentially hitting the 20s in the suburbs and northern Georgia. However, temperatures are predicted to rebound into the 50s by Tuesday afternoon, offering a brief respite from the wintry conditions.

This early arrival of sub-freezing temperatures is somewhat earlier than the historical average for Atlanta, which typically sees its first frost around November 4th and first freeze around November 16th. Should temperatures drop to 28 degrees, it would mark a considerably earlier freeze than in previous years.

While some models suggest the potential for flurries or snow showers in the higher elevations of the north Georgia mountains on Monday, the overall likelihood of significant snowfall is low. The American weather model indicates no snow, while the European model hints at possible snow showers due to lake-effect patterns from the Great Lakes, which could bring light snow into the area via the Ohio Valley.

Residents are urged to dress warmly and take protective measures for any plants that are vulnerable to freezing temperatures in preparation for this sudden change in weather.
