The Athletics Fiji season kicked off with great enthusiasm yesterday as nine clubs and six secondary schools gathered for an exciting competition at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. The event, which attracted over 100 athletes, marked an important step toward their goals, particularly for those eyeing spots in the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Athletics Fiji’s head coach, Albert Miller, highlighted the significance of this initial competition, stating it serves as a vital preparation platform for athletes as they gear up for prestigious events, including the Commonwealth Games, Coca Cola Games, and Oceania Games. “We are trying to encourage the athletes vying for a position in the Commonwealth Games,” Miller remarked, emphasizing the opportunity for athletes to assess their fitness and showcase their talents.
The competition featured various events such as the 100m, 50m for younger participants, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Javelin, Discus, and High Jump. This well-planned approach allows athletes to smoothly transition back into competitive mode while gradually increasing their challenges throughout the season.
Notable performances included Isoa Vunianamatana, who achieved a remarkable milestone by clearing the two-meter mark in the high jump. Miller stated that this feat indicates promising progress for Vunianamatana, adding positive energy to the season ahead.
With more competitions on the horizon, Athletics Fiji is committed to providing valuable opportunities for athletes to refine their skills and strategies as they prepare for the June 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The kickoff event sets an optimistic tone for the season, inspiring athletes to strive for excellence and keep pushing their limits.
