Athletic Bilbao and Newcastle United: 30-Year Friendship Sparks Flag Unveiling Before Champions League Clash

In the grand Palacio Ibaigane in Bilbao, the Athletic Club’s headquarters, a unique connection with Newcastle United is celebrated through a pennant that honors a friendship forged over three decades. This bond will be reignited on a significant stage as the two clubs prepare to meet in the Champions League for the first time.

The partnership traces back to 1994, when an Athletic Club fan found themselves stranded in Newcastle after a UEFA Cup match. Graciously taken in by a local family, this act of hospitality sparked a warm relationship between the supporters of both teams. This was celebrated when Athletic visited St James’ Park for a return leg, with the home fans enthusiastically welcoming the traveling contingent with applause rather than hostility, emphasizing a sense of camaraderie rarely found in football.

Adam Stoker, from the fan group Wor Flags, shared that the memory of that match remains vivid among those present. Many considered it one of their best football experiences, highlighting the overwhelming kindness and community spirit that characterized the event.

The tie between Newcastle and Athletic was further solidified during a friendly in 2022, where Athletic presented Newcastle with a flag symbolizing their friendship. Stoker reflected on his own connection to the club, which began with his first attendance at a testimonial match for Newcastle player Rob Lee in 2001.

Julen Izagirre Garnika, who has formed a lively friendship with Stoker, expressed his admiration for both clubs. He discovered Newcastle through player Alan Smith, appreciating the club’s culture, dedicated fanbase, and the enchanting atmosphere at St James’ Park. Despite missing the historic encounter in 1994, Izagirre recounts stories told by older fans who thrilled at the unity shared that day.

Both Stoker and Izagirre noted the deep regional pride shared by the supporters of both clubs, stemming from a unique status as one-club cities. This shared identity underlines their mutual appreciation for football, making the upcoming Champions League clash not just a match but a genuine celebration of connection.

Ahead of the highly anticipated game on Wednesday, a new flag representing the shared values between the two sets of fans will be unveiled. This gesture symbolizes the enduring warmth and friendship between the supporters that began over 30 years ago, showcasing the beautiful side of football that transcends rivalries and celebrates unity.
