ASU Shocks No. 17 Utah: A Season of Redemption बेला գնաց

Last season, Arizona State University (ASU) faced a heavy defeat against Utah, losing 55-3. However, Friday night marked a turning point as ASU delivered a stunning upset over No. 17 Utah, winning 27-19 at Mountain America Stadium, igniting a spirited celebration in Tempe.

With this victory, ASU improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12, a notable achievement considering they were predicted to finish last in the conference at the season’s start. Conversely, Utah, which was favored to claim the top spot, fell to 4-2 and 1-2 in conference play.

Head coach Kenny Dillingham praised his team’s performance, noting, “The biggest thing today is when you look at the rushing statistics, we ran the ball decent. We stopped the run decently versus a program where that’s their identity. This win shows we’re trending in the right direction, and what we’re doing is working.”

Last season’s 3-9 record felt distant as ASU showcased a dominant second half, led by running back Cameron Skattebo and a robust defensive effort. Skattebo made significant contributions with a 50-yard touchdown run and a 47-yard touchdown run, both coming in the second half.

“Coach Dillingham says big-time players make big-time plays. I tell him, like I tell you guys every week, to give me the ball every play,” Skattebo explained. His first touchdown gave ASU a 20-16 lead late in the third quarter, while the second secured a 27-19 advantage with just over two minutes remaining.

Skattebo concluded the night with 22 carries for 158 yards and added four receptions for 41 yards. The ASU defense was instrumental, applying pressure on Utah quarterback Cam Rising, who completed only 16 of 37 passes for 209 yards and threw three interceptions, two of which were caught by linebacker Caleb McCullough.

“It meant a lot for me just to know that we got to win. I’m doing whatever I can to win,” McCullough said. “This is my last year of college, and my main goal is just to win because when you win, everything goes good for everybody.”

ASU is set to face Cincinnati in Week 8 on October 19, while Utah will host TCU on the same day.

In a game filled with intense moments, the Sun Devils successfully managed the clock to seal their impressive victory. The ASU defense made crucial stops, including a turnover on downs by Utah, while the offensive line protected their quarterback effectively throughout.

With this win, ASU hopes to continue building momentum as they navigate the remainder of their season.
