The Houston Astros have placed right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. on the 15-day injured list due to a sprained right foot, retroactive to Friday. This decision comes prior to his expected start against the Athletics as the Astros embark on a four-game series.
McCullers, who has made seven starts this season following two years away from the mound due to multiple arm injuries, has recorded a 1-2 record with a 4.91 ERA. His last appearance saw him giving up four hits and four runs while striking out six over five innings in a 4-2 loss to the White Sox.
This injury adds to the mounting challenges facing the Astros’ rotation. The team has already been dealing with significant injuries, including the absences of Hayden Wesneski and Ronel Blanco, both of whom are out for the season following Tommy John surgeries. Spencer Arrighetti has been sidelined since April after a thumb injury, while Luis Garcia and Cristian Javier are still rehabilitating from similar surgeries.
In light of McCullers’ injury, rookie right-hander Ryan Gusto will step in as the starter for Monday’s game. The Astros also announced the recall of right-hander Jason Alexander from Triple-A Sugar Land to fill McCullers’ spot on the roster.
Despite these setbacks, the Astros continue to lead the AL West, demonstrating resilience and depth as they adapt to the challenges presented by their current roster situation. As the season progresses, the team’s ability to overcome these injuries will be crucial for their success.
