The Houston Astros have officially signed right-handed reliever Hector Neris, who is set to be active for today’s game. In a corresponding move, the team has optioned Jason Alexander to Triple-A. Neris, who had fallen out of favor after the Angels designated him for assignment and subsequently released him, quickly found a new opportunity.
During his stint with the Astros in the 2022-23 seasons, Neris was impressive, posting a 2.69 ERA across 133 2/3 innings and maintaining a 1.50 ERA in six playoff innings, contributing to the team’s 2022 World Series run. However, his performance dipped in the 2024 season, culminating in a 4.70 ERA over 15 1/3 innings after rejoining Houston.
After brief contracts with the Braves and Angels this season, Neris struggled, recording a combined 7.80 ERA over 15 innings. Despite a solid strikeout rate of 29.4%, he battled control issues, evident in his 11.8% walk rate, and gave up three home runs in limited appearances.
Nevertheless, Neris’ 3.47 SIERA suggests that there is potential for improvement, which likely influenced the Astros’ decision to bring him back. His previous tenure with the team and status as a clubhouse favorite add to the optimism surrounding his return. The Astros’ top-performing bullpen this season allows them to assess if Neris can reclaim his role as a reliable relief option.
This opportunity is not only a chance for Neris to redeem his season but also a testament to the Astros’ trust in his prior abilities. If he can stabilize his performance, it could provide a significant boost to an already strong bullpen.
