Aston Martin’s Formula 1 team has introduced a significant upgrade package for the Belgian Grand Prix, featuring a modified nose for their car. This new nose design is attached to the second element of the front wing, creating a slot gap that differs from the previous configuration where it connected to the lower element.
Team principal Andy Cowell acknowledged that this nose development is likely influenced by renowned designer Adrian Newey, who is highly regarded for his understanding of airflow—a crucial factor in optimizing performance in this key area of the car.
Cowell explained that the primary focus of this upgrade is to enhance “flow quality” beneath the wing, particularly on circuits that demand medium to higher downforce. However, during the Belgian Grand Prix, known for its low downforce requirements, the immediate benefit of the new nose design is described as modest. Nevertheless, it is expected to perform better on tracks like Budapest, which have higher downforce needs.
In line with its ongoing commitment to performance, Aston Martin has also introduced a new front wing as a “test item.” Fernando Alonso utilized this new component during the first practice session, but given the sprint format and limited track time, it may be replaced with the previous version for the remainder of the weekend.
Cowell also shared that the team is utilizing a low-downforce rear wing and beam wing that is an evolution of their existing designs to better match the Spa circuit’s demands. They continue to use an older-spec floor, which Cowell noted is better suited to the high ride height and low downforce conditions typical at Spa.
Looking ahead, Cowell indicated that while there are no more active aerodynamic developments planned, the team will continue to introduce circuit-specific components tailored to the varying demands of the remaining races throughout the season.
