South Carolina’s Ashlyn Watkins will take a break from basketball and academics for the 2025-26 season as she continues her recovery from an ACL injury incurred in January. Coach Dawn Staley confirmed Watkins’ decision, noting that she will continue her rehabilitation with the team’s staff. Watkins, who has one season of eligibility left, will not be enrolled in school during this period.
Reflecting on her situation, Staley expressed empathy for Watkins’ journey, saying, “It’s hard because basketball is a big part of what an athlete does. The mental part of it too, it’s draining. If your mentals aren’t right, it’s going to have a compound effect. I think it’s pretty brave of her to do something like this.” Staley values their ongoing communication, affirming that things are progressing as planned.
Watkins’ junior year was tumultuous, with her playing only 14 games. An arrest last August on charges of assault and kidnapping led to her suspension, though the charges were eventually dropped following her completion of a pre-trial intervention program. She returned to practice in November after missing the season opener.
In a July social media announcement, Watkins expressed her intent to focus on personal growth during the hiatus, stating, “With everything that’s happened this year, I’m going to take some time off to focus on myself, my community, my faith, and my family, so that I can grow as an individual and attempt to master this journey of life.” She aims to return stronger for the 2026-27 season.
Watkins’ collegiate career has had notable highlights. During her breakout 2023-24 season, she played a pivotal role in South Carolina’s 38-0 season and claimed their third national championship. Averaging 9.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and 2.5 blocks per game, her contributions were crucial. Her standout performances, such as recording a career high 20 rebounds in the Final Four against NC State and achieving a double-double before her injury, underscore her impact on the court.
Though she will be absent in the upcoming season, Watkins’ resolve to return rejuvenated offers a hopeful outlook for her future with the Gamecocks. Her determination and resilience are expected to inspire both her team and fans as she prepares for her comeback.
