Aruka Fiji is extending its transformative program to the Northern Division, aimed at empowering marginalized and at-risk women. Supported by Women’s Fund Fiji, the program has already trained over 50 women across three regions since its launch in June. Founder and Director, Inoke Drauna, highlighted the initiative’s focus on promoting entrepreneurship, supporting income-generating projects, and offering psychosocial support, such as counseling and rehabilitation for recovering addicts.
The program debuted with 12 young women graduating, who had been marginalized within their communities. It later expanded to the Western Division, where an additional 22 women completed a comprehensive 12-module course. Currently, the initiative serves residents at Bulileka Hart in Labasa, with plans to engage more women nationwide.
Participant Ateca Maiqalau expressed her appreciation for the program’s impact, noting how it has empowered single mothers and widows to gain independence and self-reliance. She recognized that the training challenged traditional notions of work, enabling women to earn substantial incomes from home through entrepreneurship.
Aruka Fiji’s approach involves profiling communities to address specific needs of vulnerable women and girls. The program’s overarching goal is to empower these women to achieve self-sufficiency while contributing to resilient communities.
This initiative is part of broader efforts in Fiji that focus on financial literacy and entrepreneurship to uplift women within communities. Supported by government bodies and international organizations, these programs equip women with essential business management and financial literacy skills. Such empowerment initiatives help enhance personal growth and contribute to economic resilience and self-reliance in the community.
The long-term vision of Aruka Fiji and similar initiatives is optimistic, aiming for societal progress by investing in women’s potential. Empowering women creates a ripple effect that benefits their families and communities, fostering sustainable development and positive change throughout Fiji.
