Art’s Impact: Explore the Upcoming Series on Creativity and Change!

BEYOND THE CANVAS, returning Friday, August 23, 2024, at 9:30 p.m. on KPBS 2 and available for streaming on the PBS app, showcases the finest arts and culture journalism from PBS NEWSHOUR’s CANVAS series. Each episode revolves around a unique theme, utilizing artist profiles and personal narratives to delve into various concepts.

The first episode, “Art All Around Us,” premieres on August 23 and highlights artists who demonstrate that art permeates every aspect of life, not confined to stages, screens, or pages. This segment features trailblazers from diverse fields, including female big wave surfers and Latino baseball pioneers.

Following this, Episode 2 titled “Art: Innovated,” currently available for streaming, focuses on the innovative spirit among artists and creators, showcasing figures like comedian Ziwe, Grammy award-winner Arooj Aftab, and Broadway star Andre de Shields.

In Episode 3, “Art, To Change The World,” viewers will explore art’s role as a catalyst for social change. The episode features insights from Oscar-winning actor Riz Ahmed and portrait photographer Jess T. Dugan on how art can reveal untold stories and advocate for positive change.

Episode 4, “Art, Black Women Lead,” celebrates the significant artistic contributions made by Black women, while Episode 5, “Art, The Power of Words,” examines the impactful work of writers, poets, and lyricists. This episode includes discussions with Brandi Carlile, Louise Erdrich, and Rissi Palmer, focusing on how their writing reflects personal experiences and fosters empathy.
