Art Unplugged: Explore PBS’s New Season Unveiling Creativity

BEYOND THE CANVAS, a series showcasing the finest arts and culture reporting from PBS NEWSHOUR’s CANVAS series, is back for its third season. Each episode focuses on a specific theme, utilizing artist profiles and personal narratives to delve deeper into the world of art.

The season kicks off with Episode 1, titled “Art All Around Us,” premiering on Friday, August 23, 2024, at 9:30 p.m. on KPBS 2 and available for streaming on the PBS app. This episode highlights artists who demonstrate that art is an integral part of daily life, featuring pioneers such as women big wave surfers and Latino baseball trailblazers.

Episode 2, “Art: Innovated,” can be streamed now via the PBS app. This episode celebrates innovation in the arts, showcasing creators like comedian Ziwe, Grammy-winner Arooj Aftab, and Broadway star Andre de Shields, all of whom are redefining their art forms.

In Episode 3, “Art, To Change The World,” also available for streaming on the PBS app, the series explores art’s role as a social catalyst. It highlights its ability to reveal hidden histories and advocate for positive change, featuring insights from Academy Award-winning actor Riz Ahmed and portrait photographer Jess T. Dugan.

Episode 4, titled “Art, Black Women Lead,” pays tribute to the significant artistic contributions made by Black women, while Episode 5, “Art, The Power of Words,” focuses on writers, poets, and lyricists who articulate their experiences through compelling writing. This episode features conversations with artists like Brandi Carlile, Louise Erdrich, and Rissi Palmer. All episodes can be streamed via the PBS app.
