BEYOND THE CANVAS will showcase the finest in arts and culture journalism from the CANVAS arts series of PBS NEWSHOUR. Each episode revolves around a distinct theme, featuring artist profiles and personal narratives to delve into the subject matter.
The first episode, titled “Art All Around Us,” will debut on Friday, August 23, at 9:30 p.m. on KPBS 2 and is also available for streaming on the PBS app. This episode honors artists who demonstrate that art extends beyond traditional platforms such as stages, screens, or pages. It showcases groundbreaking figures, including women big wave surfers and Latino baseball pioneers.
The second episode, “Art: Innovated,” is available for streaming now via the PBS app. It highlights the essence of innovation within the arts, focusing on artists and creators who are challenging the limits of their respective art forms, including comedian Ziwe, Grammy winner Arooj Aftab, and Broadway star Andre de Shields.
The third episode, “Art, To Change The World,” also available for streaming on the PBS app, explores the influential role that art plays as a catalyst for social change. It features insights from Academy Award-winning actor Riz Ahmed and portrait photographer Jess T. Dugan.
The fourth episode, “Art, Black Women Lead,” is currently streaming on the PBS app and celebrates the significant artistic contributions made by Black women.
Lastly, the fifth episode, “Art, The Power of Words,” examines the works of writers, poets, and lyricists who have transformed their personal experiences into compelling literature. This includes discussions with notable figures such as Brandi Carlile, Louise Erdrich, and Rissi Palmer, and is also available for streaming on the PBS app.
