Jessica Plichta, a 22-year-old preschool teacher, was arrested on camera shortly after completing a television interview where she criticized former President Donald Trump’s stance on Venezuela. This incident occurred during an anti-war protest in Grand Rapids, Michigan, coincidentally following the detention of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro by the U.S. military.
In footage aired by local station WZZM, Plichta can be seen being approached by police as she concludes her interview, stating, “I am not resisting arrest.” She was reportedly the sole individual taken into custody among approximately 200 protesters present.
The Grand Rapids Police Department cited Plichta for “obstructing a roadway and failure to obey a lawful command,” an assertion she has contested. Following her arrest, Plichta described a rough handling by officers, including being placed in a patrol car without a seat belt and being subjected to questioning about her connection to Venezuela and other demonstrators.
Plichta remarked on the incident, “I don’t think it’s a coincidence that as soon as I finished an interview speaking on Venezuela, I was arrested,” suggesting that her detainment may have been motivated by the controversial nature of her statements regarding U.S. policy in Venezuela.
She expressed concerns over the apparent ease with which authorities can suppress dissenting voices, particularly relating to anti-war sentiments. “It just shows how much they feel they can get away with things,” she further elaborated, reflecting on the police’s approach to handling political protests.
After three hours in custody, she was released, thanks to a rally of supporters who demanded her freedom. A video shared on social media captured her jubilant response upon reuniting with fellow protesters.
In contrast, the police department defended its actions, stating that protesters were given multiple warnings to vacate the roadway, which they allegedly ignored, thus justifying their intervention.
