The Chinese Naval Hospital Ship Ark of Silk Road has made its inaugural arrival in Suva, Fiji, offering free healthcare services to local communities. This visit marks a significant moment in the more than five-decade-long partnership between China and Fiji, characterized by mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared commitment to enhancing the well-being of their peoples.
Medical teams aboard the ship are poised to provide a range of healthcare services, from check-ups to treatments, representing a beacon of hope for families in Fiji who often struggle to access specialist medical care. The ship’s presence aims to address some of the pressing healthcare needs in Suva, helping to alleviate the burden on local medical services.
Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, emphasized that the hospital ship’s visit is not merely a goodwill gesture but a reflection of the enduring friendship and robust bilateral relations between the two nations. He highlighted the contributions of China in healthcare, education, and infrastructure development in Fiji over the years, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in addressing local challenges.
Ambassador Jian also pointed out that the hospital ship will engage with the local community by organizing various cultural activities, such as basketball and badminton games, aimed at promoting cultural exchange and goodwill between the people of China and Fiji.
The visit draws parallels with previous humanitarian efforts by China, such as the Bright Journey Medical Team’s missions in Fiji, where they have provided free cataract surgeries to over 200 individuals since 2013, earning them the affectionate title of “Angel of Light.” These initiatives highlight the ongoing commitment of China to bolster healthcare in Fiji, reflecting a shared dedication to improving quality of life through international collaboration.
The Chief of Staff of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Brigadier General Sapenafa Motufaga, welcomed the Chinese Naval Hospital Ship, acknowledging its role in strengthening ties and offering much-needed health services to the Fijian people. The ship will be stationed in Fiji for eight days, providing medical services starting tomorrow at the Vodafone Arena Hall B.
This collaborative initiative stands as a testament to the power of diplomacy and collective efforts in delivering essential healthcare services and fostering enduring friendships, offering hope for a brighter, healthier future for the communities of Fiji.
